Two advanced communication satellites to be delivered by 2031
Boeing Co announced Thursday that it has secured a $2.8 billion contract from the U.S. government to develop and produce two next-generation satellites. The deal includes options for two additional satellites under the Evolved Strategic Satellite Communications (ESS) program.
The ESS system is designed to provide secure, space-based nuclear command, control, and communication capabilities for the U.S. president and joint global strategic forces. These satellites will be deployed in geostationary orbit and are intended to ensure constant, reliable coverage for U.S. military and strategic operations around the world.
“This award reinforces Boeing’s continued role in delivering secure, mission-critical systems for national defense,” the company said in a statement.
The first of the two space vehicles is expected to be delivered by 2031, with the full system ultimately enhancing the U.S. Department of Defense’s ability to maintain strategic deterrence and crisis response.
