Chipmaking giant responds to internal breach
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest chipmaker, announced on Tuesday that it uncovered unauthorized internal activity that may have compromised sensitive trade secrets. The company confirmed it has disciplined the employees involved and initiated legal proceedings in response to the breach.
“TSMC maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward any actions that compromise the protection of trade secrets or harm the company’s interests,” the firm stated. While details are limited due to the ongoing judicial review, TSMC emphasized its commitment to safeguarding its intellectual property and competitive edge.
Advanced chip designs possibly targeted
The incident is believed to involve proprietary information related to the development and production of 2-nanometer chips, among the most advanced manufacturing processes in the global semiconductor industry. Nikkei Asia reported that several former employees are suspected of attempting to extract this information while still employed at TSMC, though the company has not confirmed these details publicly.
TSMC said it detected the issue through its “comprehensive and robust monitoring mechanisms” and responded with swift internal investigations. The company declined to provide additional information about the individuals involved or the specific nature of the data allegedly compromised.
Geopolitical and strategic implications
Semiconductors have become increasingly vital in global technology and geopolitical competition, especially with the growth of artificial intelligence applications. Similarly, in 2023, ASML reported a breach involving proprietary data misappropriated by an employee in China.
