US power demand to hit record highs

Date:

Data centers drive surge in electricity use

The United States is projected to see record electricity consumption in both 2025 and 2026, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). In its latest Short Term Energy Outlook, the agency attributes much of this rise to energy-intensive data centers. Power sales to the commercial sector are forecast to grow by 3 percent in 2025 and by 4.5 percent in 2026, driven largely by this expanding demand.

Industrial electricity sales are also expected to rise, with the EIA predicting a 2 percent increase in 2025 and 3.5 percent in 2026. This marks a sharp contrast to the relatively flat consumption patterns seen between 2005 and 2020, when annual energy use grew by only 0.1 percent.

Concerns over grid capacity and costs

The EIA’s projections come amid growing concern about whether the nation’s grid can keep pace with accelerating demand. Analysts warn of potential blackouts, higher energy bills, and worsened climate outcomes if supply fails to match consumption. The anticipated demand surge raises questions about long-term energy infrastructure investment and the balance between reliability, cost, and sustainability.

Household electricity prices are expected to rise by 4 percent in 2025 compared to 2024. While notable, this aligns with recent trends, as average annual increases of around 5 percent have been recorded since the pandemic.

Policy shifts under the Trump administration

President Donald Trump declared an energy emergency on his first day in office, aiming to bolster fossil fuels and nuclear energy production. His administration has supported these sectors while slowing the expansion of solar and wind power, a move that has sparked debate about the best path forward for meeting future demand.

With demand growth at levels not seen in decades, the policy decisions made in the coming years will shape the resilience and composition of the US energy mix for the long term.
