Agreements with nuclear energy providers
Meta announced on Friday that it has signed agreements with three nuclear power companies as part of its strategy to secure long-term electricity supplies for its expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The deals involve Vistra, TerraPower and Oklo, all of which are developing or operating nuclear power technologies. The energy will be used to support Meta’s Prometheus supercluster computing system, which is being built at a data center in New Albany, Ohio. Financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
Prometheus data center and power capacity
Meta said the combined projects are expected to add 6.6 gigawatts of power capacity by 2035, an amount that would exceed the total electricity demand of the U.S. state of New Hampshire.
The company will help fund Vistra’s existing nuclear plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania, extending their lifespan and increasing output. TerraPower’s and Oklo’s projects are still under development and are expected to come online later in the decade.
Market reaction and economic impact
Shares of Vistra and Oklo surged following the announcement, rising 15% and 17% respectively, while Meta shares were largely unchanged.
Meta said the agreements are expected to create thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of long-term operational positions as the facilities are developed and brought into service.
Nuclear energy and the AI arms race
The deals highlight the growing importance of nuclear energy in supporting large-scale data centers as AI workloads become more power intensive. Reliable, carbon-free electricity is increasingly viewed as critical to maintaining competitiveness in the global AI race.
Meta has joined other technology giants in turning to nuclear power. The company, along with Amazon and Google, previously signed a pledge to support tripling global nuclear energy capacity by 2050. In June, Meta also announced a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy to purchase nuclear power from its Illinois facility beginning in 2027.
Future timelines
Meta’s agreement with TerraPower includes funding for two nuclear projects that could begin generating electricity as early as 2032, with options to source power from additional future projects through 2035.
Oklo’s advanced nuclear technology campus in Ohio could come online as soon as 2030, further supporting Meta’s long-term energy needs as it continues to scale its AI infrastructure.
