Executives said Thursday that for at least one or two quarters in 2026, sales from first-class and other upgraded seats could outpace main-cabin ticket revenue.

In the most recent quarter, Delta’s premium ticket revenue rose 9% year-over-year, reaching nearly $5.8 billion. Meanwhile, standard economy seat revenue declined 4%, totaling just over $6 billion. CEO Ed Bastian noted continued strength in high-end travel demand, which underpins Delta’s optimistic forecast for late 2025 and into next year.

Premium offerings reshape airline revenue model

Delta has steadily pivoted toward higher-paying customers. During its investor day last year, the airline revealed that only 43% of 2024 revenue came from main-cabin tickets, a sharp drop from 60% in 2010. In contrast, nearly 60% of total revenue now stems from premium seats and Delta’s profitable SkyMiles loyalty program.

This shift reflects a broader trend across the airline industry, with carriers like Frontier and United also targeting travelers who prioritize comfort and perks. Features such as lie-flat beds, privacy partitions, and large entertainment systems are becoming more common — and more critical to airline profits.

Luxury growth comes with design challenges

As more airlines race to expand their premium offerings, the complexity of these new seat designs has introduced regulatory hurdles. Some aircraft deliveries have been delayed as safety authorities evaluate the structural and operational impacts of the enhanced seating.

Despite these challenges, Delta’s commitment to premium experiences appears to be paying off. The airline remains the most profitable U.S. carrier, and its customers continue to opt for comfort, even in uncertain economic conditions.

First-class travel could soon surpass main cabin earnings Delta Air Lines is closing in on a major milestone: revenue from its premium cabins may soon exceed earnings from standard coach seats.
