German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned Sunday that while Europe remains committed to cooperation with the United States, the European Union will act in unison if Washington pushes ahead with new tariffs on steel and aluminium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at the opening of the Hanover industrial trade fair\u2014where Canada is this year’s partner country\u2014Scholz took direct aim at U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s protectionist agenda and comments about Canada\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump has recently referred to Canada as the \u201c51st state\u201d and floated the idea of annexation, prompting Scholz to issue a firm rebuke. \u201cWe stand by your side,\u201d Scholz said. \u201cCanada is not a state that belongs to anyone else. Canada is a proud, independent nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Scholz\u2019s comments were met with applause at the trade fair, which brings together major industrial players from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The chancellor also addressed Trump’s plans for imposing tariffs, reiterating Europe\u2019s opposition to protectionism. \u201cOur answer to \u2018my country first\u2019 is more free trade, greater competitiveness and more technological sovereignty,\u201d Scholz declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He emphasized that Europe is not naive but also not weak. \u201cTrade wars hurt all sides,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I say to the United States: Europe\u2019s goal remains cooperation. But if the U.S. leaves us no choice, such as with the tariffs on steel and aluminium, we as the EU will react as one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
